Volunteer Spotlight: Front Desk Team

For today’s volunteer spotlight, we talked to two new members of A Place To Be’s front desk team, Anvitha and Crisdeth! Anvitha is a brand new volunteer with A Place To Be, while Crisdeth is a seasoned volunteer stepping into a new position. Check out their thoughts on volunteering with A Place To Be!

Tell us a bit about your experience volunteering at A Place To Be? How did you learn about us/get involved here at A Place To Be?

Anvitha: I have only been volunteering here for a while, but I was specifically looking online for unique and meaningful places to volunteer—and that’s when I found A Place To Be. Something about it really stood out to me. I was looking online for unique and meaningful places where I could volunteer—somewhere that wasn’t just a typical volunteer opportunity.

The name itself caught my eye, and once I started reading about what the organization does—using music therapy and the arts to support people emotionally and mentally—I was really moved. It felt like a place that truly cares about others and makes a difference in people’s lives, so I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

Crisdeth: My mother was looking for special therapy for my little brother. We didn’t have access to special services at the time, so we had to search elsewhere. Someone recommended APTB to my mom. My brother started therapy and fell in love with the place. He really enjoyed making music and performing. My mom encouraged me to volunteer to experience the program and accompanied my brother during the summer theater program.

From there, I started volunteering every summer with my brother! This year, I wasn’t able to directly volunteer in a summer program due to volunteering being full, so I was invited to volunteer in the Front Desk. I chose it since I wanted to help with welcoming people in the building to a Place To Be.

What were some of the ways you’ve been involved with APTB? Do you have any specific moments that stand out to you or inspiring moments you want to share?

Crisdeth: In the past, in summer camps, I would usually just help set up things for the program and encourage the campers during activities. However, in the theater program, they needed someone to play as a Giant Cloud. I was a bit nervous since I haven’t performed on a stage since Elementary School and wasn’t the best on stage. However, I decided to take the role to help out. Going on stage and singing to the crowd felt quite extraordinary. I had completely forgotten about the nervousness and just started enjoying singing.

Crisdeth’s Unexpected Role

Anvitha: Since I am new, I haven’t had the chance yet to get involved in a lot of activities. But honestly, even just being here for one day was inspiring. Everyone I met—whether it was staff or volunteers—was so kind, welcoming, and full of positive energy. People were smiling, greeting each other, and offering help without hesitation. It was such a comfortable and safe space to walk into, especially as a new volunteer. The way the staff treated the clients with so much warmth and respect really stood out to me.

Why should someone volunteer at A Place To Be? What sets being involved with APTB apart from other organizations, and what has kept you coming back? What is your favorite thing about A Place To Be?

Anvitha: Even though I’ve only been here a short time, I can already tell that A Place To Be is different from a lot of other organizations. The environment is relaxed, friendly, and very supportive. Everyone—from the staff to the volunteers—treats each other with respect, and it creates a really positive space to be in.

I think people should volunteer here because it’s a place where you can actually see the impact being made. What I like most so far is the atmosphere. It feels calm, welcoming, and well-organized. The staff are easy to talk to, and you never feel out of place—even as someone new. That kind of vibe makes it easier to jump in and want to stay involved.

Crisdeth: I really enjoy the warm and welcoming environment at a Place To Be. You are able to be yourself without being judged by it. Not only was I helping at APTB, but APTB was helping me. Volunteering has helped me be more open with others and trying out new things. I would have never have thought I would play as a singing cloud on stage. I also wouldn’t have volunteered in Front Desk if I didn’t know the place before. I feel very welcomed here. I’m thankful for being able to help in this wonderful place and hope to be able to volunteer next year!
