Interested In Volunteering?

A Place To Be volunteers are a meaningful part of all that we do. Our Volunteers work alongside our staff to help create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive place for everyone.

You don’t have to be a musician, singer, artist, or have experience in the arts to be a great volunteer. In fact, many of our client placements involve participating alongside clients in the activity at hand or helping a participant engage more fully.

Other volunteer opportunities include helping with events and performances, supporting community activities, and assisting with administrative or organizational tasks.

For every volunteer opportunity, we simply ask that you bring positive energy, kindness, and an open-minded and open-hearted enthusiasm. Come ready to participate, connect, learn, and help create meaningful experiences for the people we serve.

Become an Engagement Partner (Volunteer)

At A Place To Be, our Engagement Partners play an important role in creating welcoming, inclusive, and meaningful experiences for our clients and community.

Whether you support a weekly program, help at a special event, or share your time in another way, your presence can help create community, belonging, hope, and opportunities for self-expression.

Steps to Becoming an Engagement Partner

1. Complete the Volunteer Inquiry Form

Fill out the form below with some basic information about yourself and your interest in volunteering.

2. Attend an Informational Interview

Meet with our Volunteer Coordinator virtually or in person. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you, answer your questions, learn about your interests, and talk about the volunteer program.

3. Complete Volunteer Forms and Background Check

After the interview, you will receive the required volunteer forms. Volunteers who are 18 or older must also complete and pass a background check.

4. Complete Volunteer Training

You will participate in training designed to help you understand your role, our expectations, confidentiality, and how to support our clients.

5. Watch for Volunteer Opportunities

Once you have completed the onboarding process, you will receive invitations to volunteer opportunities as they become available. Opportunities depend on the needs of our programs, events, and available volunteer space.

6. Receive Your Placement and Schedule

If you accept an opportunity, you will receive information about your placement, schedule, and any program-specific expectations from your Group Leader or event lead.

7. Get Started!

Show up ready to participate, connect, have fun, and be part of the A Place To Be community!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum or maximum age to volunteer?

A Place To Be currently accepts volunteers ages 17 and older. Some volunteer opportunities may have additional age requirements depending on the setting and responsibilities.

Do I need to complete a background check?

Yes. Volunteers who are 18 or older must complete and pass a background check provided by A Place To Be as part of the onboarding process.

Will I get to use my music or other artistic skills?

Possibly! We love learning about the skills, talents, and interests our volunteers bring with them. In our client groups, however, volunteers support the staff and participate in activities rather than serving as the primary leaders, accompanists, or performers. Your artistic skills may be incorporated into a group when appropriate, but the primary goal is always to support our clients and their experience.

Do I need to have artistic skills or experience to volunteer?

Not at all! A Place To Be is rooted in performance and creative arts therapies, but you do not need to be an artist or performer to become an Engagement Partner. The creative arts are tools we use to help create belonging, hope, connection, and expression. We provide the training and guidance you need to feel comfortable in your role.

Do I have to commit to volunteering every week?

Not necessarily. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities. Some placements involve supporting weekly client groups, which require a more consistent commitment. Other opportunities may include special events or one-time volunteer projects. Each opportunity will include information about the expected commitment, so you can decide whether it works for you.

Can I volunteer with more than one group or placement?

If space and program needs allow, we are happy to have volunteers participate in more than one opportunity. However, we try to provide opportunities to as many volunteers as possible. Because some programs have limited volunteer space, completing the volunteer process does not guarantee placement in every group or opportunity you request.
